Marriage Portrait of Isaac Massa and Beatrix van der Laen
Frans Hals, c. 1622
What you see
Isaac Massa and Beatrix van der Laen sit outdoors at the foot of a tree, in the left half of the picture. He, dressed in black and wearing a hat, leans back and lays a hand on his chest. She, in a white cap and a large white ruff, rests one arm on his shoulder and lets the other hand fall in her lap. Both look out at us.
Their black clothes merge with the dark foliage, and the faces, collars and white cuffs become the points of light. On the right, the landscape opens onto a pale sky. Look in the distance for a garden with a fountain, a building with columns and a few people strolling, and for the lace cuff beside her hand.
About Frans Hals
Frans Hals lived in Haarlem and was the great portrait painter of joy: his sitters smile, laugh and seem about to speak. He painted with quick, loose brushstrokes, very modern for his time. Van Gogh and Manet admired his way of painting.
