Nurse and Child
Frans Hals, c. 1620
What you see
A seated nurse holds a baby on her lap; the child faces us with a round face and a faint smile. She sits at left, slightly behind, wearing a white cap and collar, and turns toward us with a kind expression. With one hand she holds out a small round fruit to the child. The baby’s wide embroidered dress fills the lower half of the picture.
The gold of the embroidery on dark cloth dominates the scene, along with the white of the collars and caps. The background is plain and grayish brown. Watch for the baby’s little hand resting on the dress, the necklace at the child’s throat and the red ribbon at the nurse’s collar, just beside the fruit.
About Frans Hals
Frans Hals lived in Haarlem and was the great portrait painter of joy: his sitters smile, laugh and seem about to speak. He painted with quick, loose brushstrokes, very modern for his time. Van Gogh and Manet admired his way of painting.
