The Clothed Maja
Francisco de Goya, c. 1800–1807
What you see
A young woman lies back on a couch, propped on two large white pillows. Her body forms one long diagonal, head at upper left and feet, in pointed slippers, at lower right. One hand rests behind her head, in her dark curly hair, and she looks straight out at the viewer.
Her close-fitting white dress glows against a plain reddish-brown background. A pink sash at the waist and a short orange jacket with yellow and black trim break up all that white. The pillows are painted with quick strokes that catch the sheen of silk. Seek out the golden slippers and the touches of green from the couch beneath the pillows.
