Francisco de Goya, 1799
What you see
A woman stands full-length at the center of an almost empty room. One hand rests on her hip, the other arm hangs loose, and she faces us with complete composure. A large pink shawl crosses her chest diagonally and falls to her feet over a white skirt. Behind her, at waist height, runs a low wooden railing.
The satiny pink of the shawl glows against the grey-blue wall and brownish floor. Gold bands trim it at the sleeves and near the hem, which ends in a fringe. Keep an eye out for the white shoes peeking out from under the skirt, and the small puffed white sleeve at her shoulder.
About Francisco de Goya
Francisco de Goya was born in Fuendetodos, Aragon, and became court painter to the kings of Spain. He painted elegant portraits, cheerful scenes for tapestries and also the horrors of war. He kept experimenting until the end of his life, and many consider him the first modern painter.
