Typewriter
Typewriter: free online writing and screenwriting app
Typewriter is a free app for writing in your browser, with nothing to download: a blank sheet fed into the platen, in the colors of whatever Arcadópolis theme you have on, a word counter at the bottom and nothing else to distract you.
One button turns it into a screenwriter’s typewriter: each line is a scene, an action, a character or a dialogue, Enter moves to the next element and your characters’ names complete themselves. Your documents are saved on your device, never on our servers, and you export them as a screenplay-formatted PDF, as .docx, as text or as Fountain.
Free, no ads, nothing to install.

What it has
- Text mode and screenwriter mode, with scene, action, character, parenthetical, dialogue, transition and sound.
- Autocomplete for characters, scene headings (INT. and EXT.) and transitions.
- A scenes panel with colors, synopses and drag-to-reorder; characters with bios, and notes.
- Words, characters, minutes of reading, estimated pages and a word goal.
- Find and replace across the whole document, a script report, a title page and numbered scenes.
- Imports .txt, .md and .fountain; exports .txt, .md, .fountain, PDF and .docx.
How to use it
- Open the Writing folder on the desktop and choose Typewriter.
- Type the title at the top and start on the sheet; it saves itself as you write.
- For a screenplay, tap Script: Enter moves to the next element and Tab changes the type.
- Under Documents, create another one, import a file or export the one you have open.
How does screenwriter mode work?
Each line is a screenplay element and arranges itself with the classic margins: the character centered, the dialogue below and the transition on the right. Enter moves to the element that usually comes next (a scene is followed by action; a character, by their dialogue) and Tab changes the type. When you type a name you’ve used before, the typewriter suggests the rest. On one side are your scenes, to jump to them, give them a color and a synopsis or move them around, and on the other your characters and notes.
Common questions
Are my texts uploaded?
No. Your documents are kept on this device, in your browser’s storage, and the app doesn’t send them anywhere. To keep a copy, export them: PDF and .docx to read or print, .fountain to keep working on the script in another program or to import it back here with your notes, bios and scenes.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. On a phone the sheet fills the screen, the scenes and characters panels open over it, and since there’s no Tab key, the name suggestion shows up as a button on the element bar.
