102 retro desktop themes with animated wallpapers

Themes is the app that changes the look of all of Arcadópolis, free and with nothing to download: open the Themes window, tap one, and the desktop, the window style, the animated wallpaper and the instrument you hear in the apps all change at once. It runs in the browser on your computer, phone or tablet.

There are 102 themes, from Steampunk, Synthwave and Code Rain to Frutiger Aero, Halloween and Day of the Dead. Twenty-two are free: twelve are open from the start and ten more are earned with your account. The other 80 make up the Premium pack, coming soon, and you can try any theme you don’t have yet for 30 seconds.

What it has

102 themes, each with its own living wallpaper and instrument, like a music box, a theremin or a pipe organ.
22 free themes: 12 open from the start and 10 you earn with your account.
Wallpapers drawn at your screen’s real resolution, at 30 or 60 frames per second, or still.
Search by name or instrument, plus a “Random theme” button.
A 30-second preview of the themes you don’t have yet.
They also change Happy Sisyphus’s mountain, the light on your 3D avatar and the colors of Arcade 3D.

How to use it

Open Themes from its desktop icon or the start menu; it opens in a window so you can see the wallpaper.
Tap a theme to put it on. Its card tells you which instrument it plays.
If it has a lock, tap it to try it for 30 seconds; the bar at the top tells you how to keep it.
Choose whether the wallpaper moves at 30 or 60 frames per second or stays still.

How do you earn themes?

Halloween is earned by creating your account or signing in. Six more arrive as you level up with your account, from Day of the Dead at level 2 to Art Deco at level 10; you level up by playing and earning achievements. The last three are earned by inviting friends: Stained Glass with the first, ’90s with the second and Horologium with the third. It counts when your friend creates a new account with your link and confirms their email. What you earn is yours forever and travels with your account to your other devices.

Do animated wallpapers drain the battery?

Arcadópolis measures what your device can do and adjusts the wallpaper quality by itself; if anything stutters, it quietly lowers it a little. In Themes, the Heavy tag marks the wallpapers that ask the most of your device. If your system asks for reduced motion, the wallpaper stays still, and you can also stop it yourself in Themes or in Start › Display.

Common questions

How many themes are free?

Twenty. Ten are open from the start: Steampunk, Synthwave, Vaporwave, Code Rain, Minimal, High Contrast, Northern Lights, Meadow, Glass Aurora and Pocket Screen. The other ten are earned with your account.

Do I need an account to change themes?

No. The ten open themes work without an account. You only need one to earn the other ten and to have your themes follow you to other devices.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. On a phone, Themes opens in a window so you can see the wallpaper, and while you try a theme it moves aside so you can see it in full.
