Sea Battle

Free online sea battle game with sonar

A free sea battle game in your browser, with nothing to download: place your five submarines on a 10 × 10 sea and take turns firing at your rival’s waters until you sink their whole fleet. Play against the computer, on Easy, Normal or Hard, or two players on the same device.

It takes place under the sea of Coralópolis: your rival’s waters appear on a sonar screen and yours over the reef. The submarines are shaped like animals: the Whale takes 5 squares, the Manta 4, the Narwhal and the Swordfish 3, and the Seahorse 2.

Besides firing, twice per game you can use the sonar: it listens to a 3 × 3 square and tells you how many submarine parts are there, without saying where. It’s one of the 51 games in the Arcadópolis Games folder.

What it has

  • A 10 × 10 sea and five submarines (17 squares in all), placed by hand or at random.
  • The sonar: two 3 × 3 readings per game, each one instead of a shot.
  • Against the computer on three levels; on Hard it works out where your remaining submarines can fit and uses the sonar too.
  • Two players on the same device: the screen is covered between turns so no one sees the other fleet.
  • It plays music: each column is a note and each sunk submarine plays its own motif, from the Whale’s low notes to the Seahorse’s high ones.
  • An unfinished game is saved; six achievements and records in your profile (your win with the fewest shots).

How to play

  1. Open the Games folder, tap Sea Battle and choose your opponent.
  2. Place your submarines: tap one and then the square where it goes; “Rotate” turns it upright or flat, and “Random” places them all.
  3. On your turn, tap a square in your rival’s waters: miss, hit or sunk. Or use the sonar to listen to a 3 × 3 square.
  4. The first to sink all five of the other’s submarines wins.

How the sonar works

The sonar listens to a 3 × 3 square around the square you choose and tells you how many submarine parts are still untouched there. If it says zero, those nine squares are empty and you don’t have to waste shots on them; if it says three or more, something big is there. Using it counts as your turn, so it’s most useful early on, when the sea is mostly unexplored, or over a large area you haven’t fired at.

Tips to win

At first, fire at every other square, like the dark squares of a chessboard: the smallest submarine takes two squares, so none can slip through. When you hit one, try the four squares around it and, as soon as you have two in a row, follow that line. When placing your fleet, don’t put all the submarines together or along the edges: the computer on Hard looks exactly where they fit best.

Common questions

Can I play against the computer?

Yes, on three levels. On Easy it fires almost at random; on Normal, once it hits a submarine, it chases it until it sinks; and on Hard it works out where yours can still fit and uses the sonar.

Can two people play?

Yes, on the same device. Each player places their fleet without the other seeing it and, between turns, the screen is covered with a message so you can pass the device.

Does it work on phones?

Yes: on a phone your rival’s sea is at the top, large, and yours below. Tap a square to fire. It works in the browser, with nothing to install.
