Checkers

Free online checkers: English and international

Free checkers in your browser, with nothing to download: move your pieces diagonally, capture by jumping over your opponent’s pieces and crown the ones that reach the far side. Play against the computer on Easy, Normal or Hard, or two players on the same device.

Choose English checkers, on an 8 × 8 board with 12 pieces each, or international draughts, on a 10 × 10 board with 20 pieces each, flying kings and the rule of capturing as many pieces as possible. Captures are made jump by jump, and the game marks which pieces must capture.

The pieces are turned wood, ivory and ebony, and when crowned they stack under a golden crown. Every jump plays a note. It’s one of the 51 games in the Arcadópolis Games folder.

How to play

  1. Open the Games folder, tap Checkers and choose English or international.
  2. Tap a piece and the square it goes to: it moves one square diagonally.
  3. If you can capture, you must: jump over the opposing piece and keep jumping if you can.
  4. You win by leaving your opponent with no moves.

English or international: the differences

In English checkers black moves first, pieces only capture forward and the king steps one square any way; if a piece is crowned in the middle of a capture, the move ends there. In international draughts white moves first, pieces also capture backward, the king flies any distance diagonally and you must take the path that captures the most pieces. There, only a piece that ends its move on the last row is crowned.

In both, it’s a draw if the same position repeats three times or after 50 moves of only kings and no captures. The computer thinks in the background, so the board never freezes while it decides, and if you slip, Undo takes the move back. There are three board styles to choose from, too.

Common questions

Is capturing mandatory?

Yes, in both variants. If you have a capture, the game marks which pieces can make it; in international draughts you also have to choose the one that captures the most pieces.

Can two people play checkers?

Yes, on the same device, taking turns. You can flip the board so each player sees it from their side.

How well does the computer play?

On Easy it makes mistakes so you can learn; on Hard it calculates many moves ahead and is a serious opponent.
