Musical Snake

Musical Snake: free online snake game

Musical Snake is the classic snake game, free and with music, played in your browser with nothing to download. You steer the snake around the board to eat and grow without hitting the walls or your own tail; the twist is that every bite is a note, and the snake keeps playing the tune of what it has eaten.

The notes are the day’s eight, the same as in Eight Notes, numbered 1 to 8. Eat them in order to build the scale and earn extra points. Before you start, you pick the speed (Slow, Normal or Fast) and, if you like, open walls: leave on one side and come back on the other.

It’s one of the 51 games in the Arcadópolis Games folder.

What it has

  • A 20 × 14 board, or 13 × 17 on narrow screens like a phone’s; the snake moves square by square, like the classic.
  • Three speeds that rise as you grow: Slow goes from 3 to 6 squares per second, Normal from 4 to 10, and Fast reaches 13.
  • Optional open walls, with separate records for each of the six combinations.
  • The snake takes on the colors of the notes it ate and those of your current theme.
  • Arrow keys, W A S D or a game controller; on a phone, swipe, tap where you want to turn or use the pad.
  • When you’re done, download the tune you played as MIDI or audio.

How to play

  1. Open the Games folder and tap Musical Snake.
  2. Pick the speed, decide whether you want open walls and tap “Play”.
  3. Go for the food with a ring: it’s the next note in the scale, and the number tells you which one.
  4. Don’t hit yourself or the walls. Space pauses, and at the end you see your score and whether you set a record.

How points work

There are always two pieces of food on the board: the one with a ring is the next note in the scale and is worth 2 points; the other is any note and is worth 1, but it breaks the scale. Eight ringed bites in a row complete the scale and give 10 extra points. The longer the snake, the faster it moves, so it pays to plan your route before going for the food. A 0-point game doesn’t count as a record, and score achievements count in Normal and Fast with walls.

The snake’s music

Every bite plays its note, and as you move, the snake plays its own tune with the notes it has eaten, from the oldest to the newest. The eight notes change every day because they come from the Eight Notes challenge, so today’s scale doesn’t sound like yesterday’s. The side panel shows today’s notes, with their names as Do Re Mi or C D E, and your best games.

Common questions

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. Swipe on the board, tap above, below or beside the snake’s head to turn, or use the pad that shows up on touch screens.

What if I eat the notes out of order?

Nothing bad: the snake still grows, scores 1 point and plays the note. You just break the scale streak; the 10 extra points are for eight ringed bites in a row.

Are my records saved?

Yes, on your device: each mode keeps its 10 best games, with score, length and date. The panel shows the top five for the mode you picked, and your profile shows your records for every mode.
