Youth Kneeling and Holding Out a Wine Cup
What you see
Kneeling on a striped cloth, the young man stretches out his arm and offers a small cup to the left, where his gaze also goes. His other hand rests on his knee. He wears a magenta turban with a dark tuft and a feather, long locks by his ears, a pale buttoned robe and a blue sash. Behind him, a slender tree arches overhead.
Almost everything is drawn in brown ink and golden tones, with color only in the turban and sash. The robe carries a light pattern of small marks. Seek out the long-necked flask in the lower left corner, the small inscription below the knees and the faint horizontal line crossing the page at chest height.
About Reza Abbasi
Reza Abbasi (c. 1565–1635), also called Aqa Riza, was the leading artist at the court of Shah Abbas I, who gave him the honorary title “Abbasi” in 1603. Although he also illustrated manuscripts, his specialty was single pages for albums, with one or two elegant figures drawn in a flowing, calligraphic line. He signed and dated many of his works, and his style influenced many later Persian painters, such as his pupil Mu'in Musavvir and his own son, Shafi Abbasi.
