Young Man in a Fur Hat
Reza Abbasi, c. 1600–1625
What you see
The young man stands with one hip slightly shifted, glancing to the left. A large dark fur hat with a blue and white plume frames his round face and small mouth. He wears a maroon jacket with gold ornament over a yellow tunic, and in both hands holds a round brown flask and a striped blue cloth.
Trees with golden leaves rise on both sides, the one on the left slender and curving like an S. Against the pale beige ground, the colors of his clothes look deep. A floral border and a blue-green margin frame the scene. Look at the pattern of brown figures on his trousers and the small inscription on the left.
About Reza Abbasi
Reza Abbasi (c. 1565–1635), also called Aqa Riza, was the leading artist at the court of Shah Abbas I, who gave him the honorary title “Abbasi” in 1603. Although he also illustrated manuscripts, his specialty was single pages for albums, with one or two elegant figures drawn in a flowing, calligraphic line. He signed and dated many of his works, and his style influenced many later Persian painters, such as his pupil Mu'in Musavvir and his own son, Shafi Abbasi.
