Young Woman with a Water Pitcher
Johannes Vermeer, c. 1662
What you see
A woman standing by a table opens a window with one hand while, with the other, she holds a metal pitcher resting in a basin. She wears a wide white head covering that falls over her head and shoulders, and a dark blue skirt. On the table are a small chest and a blue cloth. Behind her, on the pale wall, hangs a map.
Light passes through the window glass and turns the white linen of her head covering almost blue. The tones are cool, whites, blues and grays, with the red rug on the table as the only warm note. Spot the leaded panes with their geometric patterns, the blue rod the map hangs from and the carved finial on the chair.
About Johannes Vermeer
Johannes Vermeer lived his whole life in Delft and painted very slowly: only about 35 of his works are known. He loved the soft light that comes through a window and falls on quiet scenes of daily life. He used very expensive pigments, such as ultramarine blue made from a precious stone.
