The Combat of the Giaour and Hassan
Eugène Delacroix, 1826
What you see
Two horsemen face off at the center, so close their horses nearly collide. The one on the left, in a turban and a white cloak billowing in the wind, rides a brown horse and grips a curved saber; the one on the right, seen from behind on a dark horse, raises a mace. At lower right, a man in a red cap is down on his hands and knees.
Dust and smoke wrap the scene in browns and grays, and the whites and reds of the clothing stand out against them. The brushstrokes are quick and full of movement. Look for the tiny horsemen also fighting in the distance on the right, and the red and gold saddlecloth of the dark horse.
About Eugène Delacroix
Eugène Delacroix was the great painter of French Romanticism: he loved scenes full of movement, emotion and intense colour. He travelled to Morocco and Algeria, and the light of those countries transformed his palette. His free brushwork later inspired the Impressionists.
