Liberty Leading the People
Eugène Delacroix, 1830
What you see
Liberty, barefoot, in a red cap and with her chest bared, strides forward at the center over a barricade. She raises the blue, white and red flag in one hand and carries a musket in the other. On the left follow a man in a top hat and another with a saber; on the right, a boy with two pistols. Fallen men lie in the foreground.
Amid gray and brown smoke, the colors of the flag reappear below, in the blue shirt, red sash and white collar of the man kneeling before her. Light falls full on Liberty and sets her apart from the background. Look to the right, through the smoke, for the buildings and towers of the city.
About Eugène Delacroix
Eugène Delacroix was the great painter of French Romanticism: he loved scenes full of movement, emotion and intense colour. He travelled to Morocco and Algeria, and the light of those countries transformed his palette. His free brushwork later inspired the Impressionists.
