Man of short stature in an embroidered suit and lace collar, plumed hat in hand, standing beside a large dog

The Dwarf Antonio el Inglés

Diego Velázquez, c. 1640–1645

What you see

Antonio el Inglés stands full-length beside a large black-and-white dog that looks off to the right. One hand holds the animal by a red ribbon tied at its neck; the other holds a hat trimmed with white plumes. He gazes ahead calmly. The background is a plain dark wall.

His brown suit with gold embroidery glints with quick touches of light, and the white lace collar brightens his face. The white of the dog’s chest and legs echoes the plumes. Notice the red bow at his shoulder, which matches the dog’s ribbon, and his tall boots.

About Diego Velázquez

Diego Velázquez was born in Seville and was painter to King Philip IV in Madrid for almost forty years. He painted with loose brushstrokes that look like smudges up close and turn into lace, silk and living eyes from afar. Many painters, such as Goya and Picasso, considered him their great master.
