Silhouette of a church with a bell tower and dome on the water, under a sky shading from green to orange

San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk

Claude Monet, 1908–1912

What you see

On the left, the church of San Giorgio Maggiore is a dark silhouette: a tall, slender bell tower, a dome and low buildings that seem to float. On the right, faint in the haze, other distant domes can just be made out. The lower half is open water, and the bell tower’s reflection runs down it like a column.

The sky is a gradient from blue-green at the top through yellow to a pinkish orange at the horizon. The water repeats those tones and adds short strokes of blue and violet. The brushwork is soft and criss-crossed. Seek out the violet streaks floating on the golden water and the reddish signature in the lower right.

About Claude Monet

Claude Monet went outdoors to paint light exactly as he saw it at each moment. He painted the same place many times, in the morning, at noon or in fog, to show how colours change. In his garden at Giverny he created a water-lily pond that he painted for thirty years.
