Hazy blue-grey harbor with a small orange sun and its reflection, and a dark rowboat near the center

Impression, Sunrise

Claude Monet, 1872

What you see

A harbor seems to melt into the morning mist. On the left, masts, cranes and smoking chimneys are barely there; on the right, the shapes are paler still. Three dark boats sit on the water, and the nearest, with a standing figure, lies almost at the center. The tiny orange sun draws the eye, which slides down its reflection to the boat.

Everything is laid down in bluish and greenish greys, so the orange of the sun stands out despite its size. The sky carries pink streaks. The brushwork is quick and light, and the water is built from short horizontal dabs. Follow the column of orange flecks in the reflection, and look for the dark signature in the lower left.

About Claude Monet

Claude Monet went outdoors to paint light exactly as he saw it at each moment. He painted the same place many times, in the morning, at noon or in fog, to show how colours change. In his garden at Giverny he created a water-lily pond that he painted for thirty years.
