The Artist's Sister at a Window

Berthe Morisot, 1869

What you see

A young woman in a white dress fills most of the lower half, seated sideways in a pale armchair. She bows her head toward her hands, which hold an open fan. On the left, a glass door opens onto a balcony with an iron railing, and across the street stands a building with green awnings and people leaning out of the windows.

The dress is a great cascade of whites, grays and pale pinks, painted with long, loose strokes. The blue-gray wall carries a pattern of gold diamonds, and the floor is reddish. Don’t miss the red tip of a shoe peeking out from under the skirt and for the pink flowers on the balcony.

About Berthe Morisot

Berthe Morisot was a French painter and one of the founders of the Impressionist group: she took part in seven of its eight exhibitions, between 1874 and 1886. With quick, light brushstrokes she painted intimate scenes from the lives of the women around her, such as her mother, her sister Edma and her daughter Julie. She was married to Eugène Manet, brother of the painter Édouard Manet, and in 1896, a year after her death, the Durand-Ruel gallery held a large exhibition of her work in Paris.
