Young woman in a dark blue blouse and white apron standing in a dining room by a cabinet, a chair and a window

In the Dining Room

Berthe Morisot, 1886

What you see

A young woman in a dark blue blouse and white apron stands at the center, facing us, holding something small in her hands. On the left are a glass-fronted cabinet and a wooden sideboard; on the right, a bright window, a chair and a round table with a fruit bowl. At lower right, a small white dog completes the scene.

The paint is laid down in long, loose strokes running in many directions, especially across the floor and the apron. Blues, ochres and whites dominate, with light coming in from the right. Don’t miss the objects hanging on the back wall at left and for the signature “Berthe Morisot” at lower left.

About Berthe Morisot

Berthe Morisot was a French painter and one of the founders of the Impressionist group: she took part in seven of its eight exhibitions, between 1874 and 1886. With quick, light brushstrokes she painted intimate scenes from the lives of the women around her, such as her mother, her sister Edma and her daughter Julie. She was married to Eugène Manet, brother of the painter Édouard Manet, and in 1896, a year after her death, the Durand-Ruel gallery held a large exhibition of her work in Paris.
