Free online reversi against the computer

Free reversi in your browser, with nothing to download: place a piece so that it traps a line of your opponent’s pieces between two of yours, and every trapped piece turns to your color. Whoever has more pieces when nobody can move wins.

Play against the computer on Easy, Normal or Hard, which plays the endgame perfectly, or two players on the same device. Dots show where you can play (you can turn them off) and, if you have no move, your turn passes on its own.

It’s played on green felt with pieces that are vinyl records, black and pearl, that spin when they flip. The more pieces you flip, the longer the melody. It’s one of the 51 games in the Arcadópolis Games folder.

What it has

  • An 8 × 8 board that starts with 4 pieces in the center.
  • Against the computer on three levels, or two players.
  • Dots for possible moves, which you can turn off.
  • An automatic pass, with a notice, when you have no move.
  • Undo and hints.
  • Each flipped piece is a note of a rising arpeggio, and your unfinished game waits for you.

How to play

  1. Open the Games folder, tap Reversi and choose your opponent.
  2. Tap a marked square: your piece must trap your opponent’s pieces in a straight line (horizontal, vertical or diagonal).
  3. The trapped pieces flip and become yours.
  4. When neither player can move, whoever has more pieces wins.

Tips to win

Corners are gold: a piece in a corner can never be flipped. That’s why it pays not to play on the squares next to an empty corner, since they open the way for your opponent. Early on, flipping lots of pieces isn’t always good: leaving your opponent few moves is usually worth more than having many pieces in the middle game.

On Hard, the computer solves the endgame exactly, so you need to reach the last moves with an advantage.

The rules, one by one

Black goes first, with two pieces of each color crossed on the four center squares. Every move must trap at least one opposing piece between the new piece and another of yours, in a straight line with no gaps; one move can trap pieces in several directions at once, and they all flip. Pieces never move or leave the board: they only change color.

The game ends when the board is full or when neither player can move. The pieces are counted and the color with more wins.

Common questions

What if I have nowhere to play?

You pass: the game tells you and passes on its own. If neither player can move, the game ends.

Can two people play reversi?

Yes, on the same device, taking turns, with the same helper dots if you want them.

Is my game saved?

Yes. If you close the window, your unfinished game waits for you when you come back, and you can undo moves.
