Primavera
Sandro Botticelli, c. 1480
What you see
Nine figures line up in a grove of orange trees. At the center, a woman in white with a red cloak tilts her head beneath an arch of leaves, while above her a blindfolded winged child aims an arrow. On the left, a young man in a red cape raises a staff and three women in sheer veils dance in a ring. On the right, a woman in a flowered dress scatters blossoms, and a girl flees a bluish figure bursting out of the trees.
The dark backdrop makes pale skin and light fabrics glow, and the oranges dot the upper part with color. Look for the flowers spilling from the mouth of the girl on the right, and the intertwined hands of the dancers.
About Sandro Botticelli
Sandro Botticelli worked in Florence for the powerful Medici family. His elegant figures, with hair that seems to float in the wind, brought ancient myths to life as never before. He also painted in the Sistine Chapel, years before Michelangelo.
