Jesse (Ancestors of Christ)
Michelangelo, c. 1511
What you see
A painted stone frame in the shape of a triangle encloses the scene. Inside, a young woman sits with her pink skirt spread out, resting her cheek on her hand and looking calmly ahead. Behind her, on the left, another figure in brown tones can barely be made out in the shadows. Above, on either side of the triangle, appear bodies painted in bronze tones.
The colors are soft: pale green in the sleeves, pink in the skirt and ochres in the background. Light falls on the young woman and leaves almost everything else in half-shadow. Don’t miss the fan-shaped ornament running along the frame and, in the upper corners, the reliefs of children that look like stone.
About Michelangelo
Michelangelo Buonarroti saw himself above all as a sculptor, but the pope asked him to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. He worked for four years on scaffolding, painting hundreds of giant figures above his head. He was also an architect and a poet, and lived to be almost 89.
