Young Husband: First Marketing
Lilly Martin Spencer, 1854
What you see
The young husband fills the center in a black hat and dark green coat, caught mid-stride with one leg in the air. He hugs a wicker basket of eggs, tomatoes and greens, with a plucked bird hanging from it, and clutches a closed umbrella. Behind him, a man in a top hat grins as the wind turns his own umbrella inside out. Houses, posters and other passersby fill the background.
The tones are earthy and muted, as on a rainy day, and the wet pavement reflects the figures. Light falls on the husband's glum face and the white eggs. Don’t miss the vegetables already spilled on the sidewalk at lower left, and the lone tomato by his shoe.
About Lilly Martin Spencer
Lilly Martin Spencer was born in England in 1822, grew up on a farm in Ohio and became one of the most popular and widely reproduced women painters in mid-nineteenth-century America. Her lively, often humorous scenes of family life, which sometimes poked fun at husbands, were sold widely as lithographs. Unusually for her time, she was the family breadwinner while her husband ran the household, and she kept painting until her death at nearly eighty.
