What you see
The scene reads from left to right. A large-winged angel kneels on a meadow full of flowers and raises a right hand toward Mary, seated on the right beside the corner of a stone house. She has an open book on a marble lectern and lifts her left hand. Between them, a low wall reveals dark trees and a landscape with water.
The angel’s red cloak and Mary’s deep blue mantle stand out against the dark greens of the garden. In the distance, a pale mountain fades into haze, lighter the farther away it is. Take a close look at the carved feet of the lectern, the feathers of the wings and the tiny flowers painted one by one in the grass.
About Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo was born in Vinci, near Florence, and was a painter, inventor, engineer and scientist all at once. He filled thousands of notebook pages with flying machines, studies of the human body and mirror-written notes. He finished only a few paintings, but almost all of them changed the history of art.
