Full moon over a river crowded with sailing ships, orange torches glowing among the dark vessels on the right

Keelmen Heaving in Coals by Moonlight

J. M. W. Turner, 1835

What you see

The full moon shines high in the center, opening a bright gap in the clouds. Below it, the river stretches back to the horizon. Tall sailing ships glide on the left with sails spread; on the right, dark hulls, masts and rigging crowd together where the boatmen work beside fires. A round buoy and a raft float in the foreground.

Silvery blues and whites fill the sky and the water, where the moonlight falls in a shimmering path. Only on the right does warm orange appear, from fires wrapped in smoke. The clouds are painted in curving strokes that form a kind of vault. Seek out the small figure sitting on the raft, near the bottom center.

About J. M. W. Turner

Joseph Mallord William Turner was called “the painter of light”. He painted storms, raging seas, fog and colourful sunsets, and it is said he once had himself tied to a ship’s mast to watch a storm. He left thousands of works to his country, most of them kept today at the Tate in London.
