At the Milliner’s
Edgar Degas, 1882
What you see
A woman in a brown dress, with a white lace collar and braided blond hair, sits sideways on a sofa. In her gloved hands she holds a straw hat trimmed with blue ribbons and leans in so close that her face is almost hidden. A pale curtain hangs on the left and a green plant stands on the right. She and the hat fill almost the entire picture.
The color is soft and powdery, with hatched strokes visible in the dress and the background. The brown of the dress sits among yellows, oranges and the blue of the ribbons. Notice the long cream-colored gloves with lace cuffs, and the sofa cushion patterned with colorful diamonds.
About Edgar Degas
Edgar Degas is famous for his ballet dancers, whom he painted in classes, rehearsals and backstage more than a thousand times. He liked to capture movements of a single instant, as if they were photographs. Besides oil paint, he often used pastels, sticks of colour that give a soft, velvety look.
